Introduction
The Northeast, consisting of nine states, was the first region of Brazil to be colonized by the Potuguese. Pedro Alvares Cabral was the first to set foot in Brazil when he landed in 1500 at Porto Seguro in Bahia. Salvador, also in Bahia, became Brazil's first capital.

The region has a number of megacities with over one million population, notably Salvador, Fortaleza and Recife. They are all located on the coast where we also find some of the best beaches of Brazil such as Porto de Galinhas in Pernambuco and Praia da Pipa in Natal.

Inland there are large expanses of what the Brazilians call the Sertão, a semiarid hilly countryside.

The region has a highly developed industrial sector and extensive agriculture. Tourism is a large contributor to its economy.
