Natal, founded around 1600, population 800,000, is said to be the safest among Brazil's capital cities. 2 million vistors come here to enjoy the beaches and the off-season carnival - Carnatal - that takes place in early December.
Praia do Mare and Porta Negra are popular beach areas. Between them runs a 7.5 mile expessway, the Via Costeira, with upscale hotels, clean water and a natural park area (Parque dad Dunas).
Lots of action takes place, particularly on long weekends, on Praia da Pipa, 55 miles south of Natal. Hotels there are found under Tibau do Sul. |
