"The London Elizabeth is a comfortable, homey place to stay, although a little noisy from the traffic if your room is on the street side and you like to keep your window open. We were there for two nights in June 2006, before visiting the continent, and then again for six nights in July. The hotel's location next to Hyde Park means that visitors can escape the noise and hustle-bustle of London merely by (carefully) crossing the road and entering the park through the Marlborough Gate. The hotel sits within easy walking distance of Paddington Station, with access to the airport via the Heathrow Express. A small word of advice: For those coming into Paddington after enduring a long flight from the States or elsewhere, I would suggest taking a cab to the hotel the first time. It shouldn't cost much and will save getting lost or turned around while trying to find the hotel and wheeling luggage at the same time. Once you figure out the pedestrian route from the station to the hotel, you should be able to walk it easily enough in 10 minutes or so--even with luggage. By the way, the station itself features a shopping mall replete with food markets (e.g., Marks and Spencer), a Boots pharmacy, and places to buy books, souvenirs, etc. In summary, I recommend the London Elizabeth Hotel for the following reasons: (1) Considering that you are in pricey-pricey London, a clean, well-appointed, somewhat larger than usual room at a reasonable price; (2) a lift that may be tiny, but at least it works; (3) a pleasantly decorated restaurant featuring fresh, homemade meals and desserts at an affordable price (if you're starving, try the Hearty Ploughman's Platter for its excellent ham, English cheddar, salad, rolls, and condiments; the apple tartlet is also delicious and not too sweet); (4) a good breakfast included in the room price--the usual buffet items, with toast and coffee or tea served by the wait staff, and the option of a cooked English breakfast for an additional 4 pounds; (5) a helpful, multilingual staff, most of whom go out of their way to make visitors feel at home; (6) a comfortable bar featuring all the usual drink items, including a pretty decent house wine you can order by the glass; (7) a large, pleasant lobby and a rose garden with tables and chairs; (8) the option of eating in your room, the bar, the lobby, or the rose garden at any time of day; (9) a computer and printer in a separate room off the lobby, with free use and internet access for guests; (10) for those willing to pay extra, several interesting suites and specialty rooms. "We were delighted, upon arrival, to receive an upgrade to a suite; this was totally unexpected and most appreciated. The people at the front desk and those related to the dining services were lovely and, to a person, attentive; however, it was a bit disconcerting to be accused (apparently by the maid) of having left the balcony door unlocked and open considering that we were excessively careful to make sure it was closed and locked each time we left the room. Also, one evening as we were relaxing after dinner, someone with a key unlocked and opened our door (without knocking or ringing the bell). Fortunately we had left the chain on the door, so the person was unable to enter. We had no idea what this was about. (Perhaps someone had come to check the balcony door?) Other than these two incidents, our stay was most enjoyable. We are returning for a six-day stay on 2 July. The London Elizabeth is homey and comfortable, and we are looking forward to another visit. P.S. The food was delicious!"
