Lugano is the showplace of Ticino, the Italian-speaking canton of Switzerland, followed by Locarno and Bellinzona.
Because of the celebrities it attracts, Lugano has been called the Monte Carlo of Switzerland. Located on Lake Lugano surrounded by beautiful mountains, the city is one of the Switzerland's top tourist destinations. Lugano is also a major banking center and more than one third of its population are expatriates from foreign countries.
Conveniently, Lugano may be accessed via European Motorway E35 that runs from from Amsterdam to Rome.
Locarno gained world renown because of the Locarno Treaties, signed in 1925 to normalize Europe's borders.The city's attractions are boat trips on Lake Maggiore, film and music festivals and visits to a number of castles.
Bellinzona, Ticino's capital, has three famous castles that are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Montebello, a 13th century fortress part of the city walls, is the most picturesque. The city is located in a valley on the Ticino River at the foot of the Alps.
