The Central Region of Canton Bern comprises the valleys of the Aare and Emme rivers surrounded by hilly countryside. There we find the city of Bern, the capital of Switzerland. Although the canton is bilingual, the language of the city is German. Bern is on the list of the 10 top cities with the highest quality of life. Its historic old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
East of Bern is the Emmental, the valley of the river Emme. It is farm country, famous because of one of its products, the Emmentaler cheese. West of Bern is the Schwarzenburgerland with picture-postcard villages and fantastic views.
The northern area of the Central Region at the foot of the Jura Mountains is Seeland with its three lakes, Morat, Neuchâtel and Bienne (Biel). The region developed light precision industries, its economic cventer being Biel/Bienne.
South of the canton is the Bernese Oberland, an alpine region with spectacular scenery. The Interlaken-Jungfrau Region is a top tourist destination for visitors to Switzerland, less than 2 hours drive from Zurich. Overlooking the lakes of Brienz and Thun are the majestic Bernese Alps, crowned by the 13,642 foot (4,158m) high Jungfrau, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
