The coast line of the Province of Tarragona is the highly popular Costa Dorada (Daurada in Catalan) with its main resort towns of Tarragona, Salou, and Cambrils. Salou is also the site of PortAventura, a huge theme park that attracts some three million visitors a year.
Tortosa, capital of the Comarca (County) of Baix Ebre, is a convenient starting point for a visit to the inland region with its many points of interest. Tortosa has a colorful history going back to Roman times and was the site of the famous Christian-Jewish Diputation in the early fifteenth century.
Wine production in the area was first intruduced by the Phoenicians and expanded under the Romans. Its claim to fame is the invention of Cava, the Spanish sparkling wine. Tarragonès, Conca de Barberà , Priorat and Terra Alta are the wine-producing counties of the province. Baix Penedès is part of the Penedès region which is, by far, the largest wine producing area of Catalonia.
Horta de Sant Joan, a picturesque village in the mountainous region of Terra Alta, was once the home of Picasso.
