Barcelona is a highly attractive travel destination, drawing more than 4 million visitors a year.
The city consists of 10 districts. Districts 1 and 2 constitute the city center. District 1, Ciutat Vella is the old city with a Gothic character, while District 2, L'Eixample, is modern, constructed in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Antoni Gaudí was the domininating figure in the city's architecture. Sangra Familia, a Gaudi creation, is a vast church and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, although still under construction.
There are more than fifty museums, including the Museu Picasso in the Old City.
The central location of Barcelona is La Plaça Catalunya, a large Plaza from which radiate some of the main city thoroughfares, including La Rambla, the famous pedestrian walkway through the Old City. |
