THE BIG EASY
New Orleans is Louisiana's
largest city and for those of you who have yet to visit this wonderful city, 2003,
during which Bicentennial celebrations of the Louisiana
Purchase will take place, might be a perfect time.
New Orleans was originally
founded in 1717 on the eastern bank of the Mississippi River, which today divides
the city. On January 8, 1815 General Andrew Jackson won a stunning defeat against
the British, when he defeated General Edward Peckenham in the Battle of New Orleans
(in the War of 1812). Since then the city has grown and now is thriving metropolis
that attracts throngs of tourists.
The French Quarter's distinctive
architecture offers visitors an 'old world' charm that is sure to delight. Some
of the city's main attractions include Jackson Square, Bourbon Street, French
Market, Royal Street as well as Preservation and Dixieland Halls.
Not only is New Orleans
the place to celebrate Mardi Gras (the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday,) it is also
home to the famed New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, (which this year will
be April 25-27).
New Orleans is known for
its Cajun and Creole people. Cajuns (of which there are about 700,000 in South
Louisiana) are descendants of French Canadians. They established Acadia - now
known as Nova Scotia. In 1755 when they refused to pledge allegiance to the British
crown they were forced from there homes. Many settled in Louisiana.
Defining who is Creole isn't
quite as simple. According to one version a Creole refers to a first born of the
settlement. Others see Creole as being a descendant of an early French or Spanish
settler, or both, born in the colony. While there are those who assert that a
Creole is a person who is a mixture of African and French and/or Spanish, born
in the colony. One thing that all the definitions seem to agree on is 'being born
in the Colony'.
Don't miss out on the opportunity
to sample some of the local Cajun and Creole cuisine during your visit to the
Big Easy!
