FEATURE ARTICLE

If you are planning on visiting Ground Zero, you should be aware that free tickets are distributed (two per person) on a first come first serve basis. You can obtain the tickets at the South St. Seaport ticket booth; at Pier 16 in lower Manhattan.

The ticket booth is open from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM and you will receive tickets for the first available time. Note, you can't ask for a specific time. The viewing platform, which can accommodate 400 people, is open daily, from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM.

If you have some extra time on your hands you may also combine a visit to the Whitman Gallery of the South St. Seaport Museum at 209 Water St. The museum offers a free 20-30 minute presentation on the history and aftermath of the World Trade Center. If you are short on time, you can always walk the entire perimeter and view the site, even without tickets. Some of the viewing spots along the way include; West and Albany St., Church and Liberty St., Church and Vesey St., Park Place and Greenwich St., Murray and West St.

On March 11, 2002 a new Temporary Memorial, The "SPHERE" was dedicated. The "SPHERE", is a 45,000 ton steel and bronze sculpture by artist Fritz Koenig. The sculpture was originally created in 1971, as a monument to world peace through international trade; it stood in the fountain of the former trade center plaza. The sculpture was partly damaged and now serves as a temporary memorial, in Battery Park
