Malta has had a colorful history, in particular as the headquarters of the Knights of St. John since the 1500s. The islands with a population of 400,000 attract more than a million visitors a year.
Malta has a number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These include the capital of Valletta, built by the Knights shortly after their arriveal on the Islands and six prehistoric temples dating back to the fourth millenium BCE. The temples are the oldest free-standing structures on Earth.
7,000 years of history have provided Malta with a wealth of treasures for Museums and archaelogical sites.

Malta is also known as a destination for Medical Tourism. The government is promototing medical services to visitors from other countries as a boon to the tourism industry. |
