Introduction

La Spezia is a beautiful port city with a population a bit below 100,000.It is the Capital of the Province of La Specia which is part of the Riviera di Levante, the western section of the Italian Riviera.

The province's claim to fame is Cinque Terre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a largely untouched area of great beauty, consisting of five villages, most easily reached by train. The favorite local sport is hiking on the extensive network of trails.
