The Saarland has had an interesting history, having changed status several times after World War I. As a reusult, some Saarlanders have a feeling of separateness with respect to the rest of Germany.
Once an important coal mining and steel producing region, most of the heavy industry was dismantled after World War II. The countryside is pretty and the pollution in places like Völklingen is gone. The Völklinger Hütte, a steel plant dating back to 1900, is now a museum and UNESCO World Heritage site.
In Saarbrücken, the capital, there is still much evidence of past centuries. The Ludwigskirche, shown below, the city landmark, dates back to 1775. |
