Upper Bavaria is a vacation paradise. Its crown jewel is the City of Munich with all its cultural and entertainment offerings. In the south are the Alps and their picturesque foothills. In the southwest corner is the Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain. Close to it are Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the world-famous ski resort and Oberammergau, site of the passion plays. There are numerous lakes and and attractive areas for hiking and sightseeing. Berchtesgarden and Bad Reichenhall in the southeast corner offer spectacular alpine scenery.
Other Popular tourist destinations are the Five Lakes Region (Starnberger Fünf-Seen-Land), south-west of Munich and the South Bavarian Lakes and Foothills of the Alps (Tegernsee-Schliersee, Chiemsee, Chiemgau).
Munich is a choice travel-destination, attracting more than two million visitors a year. The city was largely destroyed in World War II, but has been completely restored to its former splendor.
