Introduction
Guangzhou is he capital of the Province of Guangdong. In the past, the city was generally referred to as Canton in the Western World.

Guangzhou with 12 million population is the third largest city of China and the commercial and financial hub of the South. Its global city rank, rating its economic importance, is beta and it is also on the list of world megacities.

The cultural life of the city is vibrant. Among China's Symphony Orchestras, that of Guangzhou is most internationally active. There is a newly constructed Opera House. The Guangdong Museum was opened in 2010.
The Guangzhou Zoo is one of China's largest and hosts some four million visitors annually.

Numerous attractions, events and facilities are listed in this City-Guide. The attractive geographic feature of the city is the Pearl River, much akin the Seine in Paris and the Thames in London. A boat ride will provide a breathtaking view of the City. Another spectacular scenic spot is White Cloud Mountain. Yuexiu Park is a huge park with lakes, hills, and famous sculptures. The Bright Filial Piety Temple is an important 1700 year-old cultural relic.

In the 19thcentury, Shamian Island was a French and British concession. Today it is an attractive neighborhood with upscale hotels and foreign consulates.
