Bulgaria, a country of 7.5 million, attracts 9 million visitors a year. They come there to ski in the spectacular mountain ranges of the southwest or bask on the sunny beaches of the Black Sea coast in the east.
Bulgaria may be reached via four international airports: Sofia, Plovdiv, Burgas and Varna.
Sunny Beach is the most popular beach resort with a huge number of hotels and restaurants. Nearby is the ancient town of Nessebar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The primary ski resorts are Bansko, Borovets and Pamporovo in the Rila, Pirin and Rhodope Mountains.
Sofia, the capital, has a population of 1.4 million. There are many museums, art galleries, cutural activities and an extensive nightlife. Tourist attractions are, prinarily, a number of magnificent cathedrals. |
