The Caucasus republics, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan have been plagued by unsolved territorial disputes. Azerbaijan has one such area, Nagorno-Karabakh which is only accessible from Armenia.
Azerbaijan is, culturally, very much like Turkey, Moslem but very much secular. Azeri, the local language, uses Latin script. The monetary unit is the Manat, abbreviated AZN.
Baku, the capital with a population of more than two million, has an international airport (GYD) and Metro.
The major city in the Northeast is Khachmaz, a center of carpet manufacture. Nearby, on the Caspian Sea, is the tourist resort town of Nabran. |
