Located less than a 1-minute walk from the 51st St. subway entrance on Midtown Manhattan's east side, the Doubletree Metropolitan Hotel is suitable for business or vacation travellers who require a centrally located hotel with meeting/banquet space, a breakfast restaurant and easy access to public transit.

Each of the hotel's air-conditioned guest rooms and suites offers cable TV, a laptop safe, a desk, a hair dryer and an iron and ironing board. Rooms with a balcony, a separate bedroom and a living area with a sofabed are also available, as are wheelchair-accessible rooms. In-room Wi-Fi is an additional $14.95 per device, per day and all rooms are non-smoking.

Hotel amenities include a fitness centre, 12,000 square feet of meeting/banquet space, room service, a business centre, a barber/beauty shop, guest laundry, a gift shop, a bar and on-site dining at the Met Grill, which serves breakfast daily. Self-parking is $43 per day with no in/out privileges, and $15 extra for SUVs. Pets are permitted for $100 per pet, per stay.

Times Square is about a 6-minute drive away, while Bloomingdales is 10 minutes away on foot. Central Park is roughly a 20-minute trip via public transit and LaGuardia Airport (LGA) can be found 15 to 20 minutes away by car. (All distances and travel time estimates: Google Maps)

The Good
The majority of the reviews sourced for this analysis were positive, with praise going to the hotel's location, staff and rooms.

The hotel's location was praised by numerous guests, who found it close to the subway, the Empire State Building, Times Square, Rockefeller Center, 5th Avenue shopping and Central Park. One lodger noted, "The location is perfect for exploring Manhattan - many choices of restaurants and shopping, and a nice walk to Central Park, Rockefeller Square, Grand Central Station and so forth".

Many reviewers complimented the hotel's staff, characterizing them as friendly, efficient, professional and accommodating. One patron remarked, "The location & staff is the number one seller hands down. From Taryn at the front desk always being on point, handling all of my accommodations, being professional & ensuring customer satisfaction. Even the housekeeping is superb when staying multiple days".

Several travellers were pleased with their lodgings at the hotel. They described their rooms as clean, spacious, bright, quiet and well equipped, with great city views and comfortable beds and linens. A few lodgers had complaints about their accommodations, however (see below).

The Bad
While the majority of reviews consulted for this analysis were positive, there were a few common complaints about the rooms and the added costs.

Although the majority of reviewers were pleased with their clean and comfortable accommodations, a few patrons had complaints. They reported no in-room fridges or coffeemakers, dated decor and small-sized rooms. Noise transfer from guests in the hallways and overhead rooms was also reported by a few lodgers.

A few travellers were disappointed with the added costs they incurred during their stay. They found the additional Wi-Fi and baggage storage fees to be expensive, and felt they should have been included in their stay. The hotel's breakfast and rates were also considered overpriced by a few guests.

Guest Recommendations
"I had insects in my room... The rooms look very "sad"; there were works going on in the hall. All by all, it's a cold and depressing hotel. It was plenty of marathon runners but it looks like a "cheap" business hotel... We wanted to change but unfortunately it was prepaid... It's a pity that you did not put on your site that there were works or ratings of other people."

"I will absolutely not consider staying at the hotel again: - from the start, service was poor, the environment was unfriendly (still major renovation going on), amenities were clearly sub-par (no premium channels or pay movies on TV, no mini-bar in the room) - I arrived at 1:30pm after a transatlantic flight and was told the earliest possible check-in was at 3pm (I had specifically called and asked for early check-in 48h in advance). The bellboy could not keep my luggage because the baggage room was completely full... - cleanliness in the bathroom was just OK, there were cockroaches in my colleague's, and the range of toiletry products was sub-par - I discovered at 6:45am that I had forgotten to pack a razor and immediately called the concierge. A disposable razor was delivered to my room at... 7:20am, i.e. 35mn later! I had had time - in desperation - to get dressed, run three blocks to CVS, buy several items, wait in line at the cashier, come back, and finish shaving when it finally arrived. - staff at the check-in counter was in alternance either too numerous (several persons hanging out in the middle of the afternoon) or clearly insufficient (esp. early in the morning at check-out time)... I am a member of Hilton Honors (#989200698), but will refuse to stay at this hotel in the future. Cheers, François M. Meurgey"

"That the hotel is under restructuration is fine to me. I choosed the hotel because I new it and I was expecting the same facilities. But none of the expected amenities were available and I was not informed of that when booking (via internet). I found some people at the desk first class but other just rude..."

"DURING OUR STAY THE HOTEL WAS BEING RENOVATED BUT THIS DID NOT DISRUPT OUR STAY. HOTEL ROOM WAS CLEAN, BRIGHT AND LARGE AND WELL WORTH THE MONEY. CLOSE TO LOTS OF EATING PLACES AND NO MORE THAN 15 MINS WALK TO TIMES SQUARE, SHOPS ETC. GO TO THE BROADWAY DINER FOR BREAKFAST. THIS DINER IS AT THE END OF THE BLOCK AND HAS GOOD VALUE BREAKFAST MENU, EFFICIENT SERVICE AND FRIENDLY STAFF. WE PLAN TO GO TO NEW YORK AGAIN AND WOULD DEFINITELY STAY AT THE METROPOLITAN. 10/10 FOR VALUE AND LOCATION. ONLY BUGBEAR WAS MANHATTAN EXPRESS BUS FROM LA GUARDIA ($12)DOES NOT TAKE YOU STRAIGHT TO HOTEL. IT DROPS YOU OFF AT PENN STATION (?) AND YOU HAVE TO WAIT FOR ANOTHER SMALLER BUS TO TAKE YOU TO HOTEL. A SMALL INCONVENIENCE WHICH DID NOT SPOIL TIME IN NEW YORK BUT ADDS TIME FROM AIRPORT TO HOTEL. RECOMMEND TAXI AS THIS IS SAME PRICE AS BUS ($24 FOR TWO PEOPLE, CHEAPER IF MORE THAN TWO) AND YOU GET TO HOTEL QUICKER."

"There was excessive noise from the adjoining room at times. The hotel was being refurbished while we were there and there was no room service. We did not find this out until we arrived."

"I understand that the hotel has started to be refurbished (it certainly needs it as the room I stayed in looked tired and shabby) and that some of the amenities e.g. bar and grill were closed during the refurbishment period. I also believed that the USA was renowned for it's approach to customer service - not at this hotel, I found the lobby staff to be quite dismissive. However, the lady on the travel desk was extremely helpful. I wouldn't rush to make another reservation at this hotel, however it was at the lower end of the price range so I suppose the saying "you only get what you pay for" applies."

"bed was broken; concierge didn't listen well to my requests and front reception desk was a mixed experience - i asked for an envelope and was told no but, then someone else found one. i have stayed at your hotel numerous times and this is the first disappointing experience so, i may check back when you complete your renovations."

"The Metropolitan Hotel has excellent access, parking, open-airy bar-lounge-restaurant, friendly& helpful staff, nice room. I was told they are going to renovate/change the hotel. I hope they don't spoil the it's good features."

"Heating system didn't work. We were cold entire stay. Staff apologized and offered extra blankets, but room was still uncomfortable. Problems with viewing in-room movies. Picture fluttered and was unclear. Engineering couldn't fix it. Front desk accidentally turned off our phone."
