Area Attractions - SKI-TRACKS Bansko is the newest ski resort in Bulgaria it has 10 years of history as such but is proud of a very well developed base for ski sports. Ten kilometers southwest of the town is located the biggest resort in Pirin Mountain Shiligarnika. Here are situated some of the best ski-tracks in the country. There is a chair lift with the capacity of 800 people per hour. The upper station of the chair-lift is at about 2450 meters above sea level and services the highest ski run in the country Platoto, where you can go skiing even at the end of May. A small tourist settlement has grown up around the lower station of the chair-lift with many public catering houses, cafes, and hotels. At a distance of three kilometers from the town of Bansko is the resort of Chalin valog, settled on the north slope of Pirin Mountain. There are four working ski-tracks with total length of 1300 meters and suitable for beginners. The ski-tow is 1200 meters long and transports 700 people per hour. The place is very suitable for tourism. There are several hotels, bungalows, ski-equipment, villas and restaurants................................1,5 km RILA MONASTERY The Rilski monastery St. Ivan Rilski is one of the most impressive monuments of the Bulgarian architecture and art. It is the oldest inhabited cloister in our country. It has also been the biggest literary center in Bulgaria since the Ottoman yoke. The monastery was founded in the 10th century by the Bulgarian hermit Ivan Rilski who later was canonized as a saint. The monastery was erected on its present place in the 14th century as at the beginning only one defence tower was built. The succeeding most important part of the building of the monastery was the period 1816-1870 when with funds collected from the whole nation and with the hard work of many master-builders, wood-cutters, icon-painters, sculptors and artists, the biggest Bulgarian monastery, which is preserved in this appearance even today, was built. It is announced as an international monument by UNESCO. The monastery is located in Rila Mountain, 129 kilometers south-western from Sofia, and 4 kilometers from the town of Rila........................................93 km ROZHEN MONASTERY Rojenski monastery, *The Birth of the Virgin Mary*, is situated south of the village of Rojen, some kilometers away from the picturesque town of Melnik. The monastery complex includes the main church, living buildings, shady verandah and fortified walls, combined in a beautiful architectural ensemble. The church is decorated with frescoes, candlesticks, crosses, and beautiful fretworks on the iconostasis. Some of the icons are exceptionally precious monuments of our fine arts. Of great interest are the scenes painted on the outer facade, and its white belfry. According to historians, the monastery was founded during the time of Alexi Slav - a Bulgarian boyar who ruled the Rhodopean territory during the 12-13th century. Today the monastery is restored, and open for visits. Yane Sandanski - one of the biggest Bulgarian revolutionaries - spent his last days in this monastery. Today his grave is under the church of St. Kiril and Metodii, not far from the Rojenski monastery.........................110 km VELIANOVA HOUSE One of the most beautiful Revival houses in Bansko is Velianova house. It is proclaimed for a cultural monument with National significance. The house is known as the most original steadied house in Bansko since the end of 18th and the beginning of 19th century. The house was given from the local people to Usta Velian Ognev who decorated it from the inside and from the outside turning it into a work of art. The house is turned into an architectural-ethnographic museum. It is two-storey, built only from stone and wood with characteristic for that period two connected hiding-places and 5 rooms with veranda on each floor. Of a great interest are the murals in the *Blue room*, the beautiful wood-carving on the veranda, and the geometrical and vegetative motifs in the southeast room of the south facade. There is a permanent ethnographic exhibition in one of the grounded rooms of the house........................................1 km MELNIK In the south-western flanks of Pirin Mountain is situated the smallest town in Bulgaria Melnik, which is proclaimed for an architectural-historical reserve and town-museum. Melnik is a combination of incredibly beautiful nature and incomparable architecture. Its history is rich in legends and myths from different cultures. The beautiful white houses, which are built one on the top of the other on the hills, are surrounded by rocks and have quiet yards and white bay-windows. They really arouse admiration. Today the town has about 230 inhabitants. Interesting are the ruins from different epoch and nations, which have inhabited the town when it prospered in cultural and economic respect. At that time it had more than 1300 houses and 25 000 inhabitants. In the sand pyramids that surround it are hollowed out cellars in which the famous Melnik wine mellow, full-bodied and heavy matures, seasons and is preserved...........................105 km PIRIN NATIONAL PARK Pirin National Park covers a considerable part of the beautiful Bulgarian mountain, Pirin. It occupiessome 40,300 ha and is situated between the valleys of the rivers Mesta and Struma. It is included in the list if the Convention of UNESCO for protection of cultural and natural heritage. On the high peaks of the mountain the flora is scanty but it is the place where one can see the rare flower edelweiss. There one can also see wild goats. In the lower parts of Pirin there is a large variety of plant and animal species. The massifs of spruce, fir, white and black pine, and white and black dwarf pine are the natural habitation for does, deer, wild-boars, bears, wolfs, wood cocks, eagles and others. Here is located the famous Baikusheva pine which is 1300 years old. The territory of the park covers the reserves Bajuvi dupki Djindjiritza /2873 ha/ and Julen /3156,2 ha/ where a great number regional plants and animals are preserved...............................10 km THE LAKE and the PEAK BEZBOG Bansko is main starting point for the northern Pirin Mountain. There are very good conditions for tourism and winter sports. Many routes start from here towards the peaks, huts and skitracks. In the northern part of Pirin is located the picturesque lake Bezbog. The nature round it is incredibly beautiful and picturesque. You will be captivated by this magnificent place. Above the lake, peak Bezbog rises impressively to its 2645-meter altitude. On the northern waterside, at a height of 2236 meters above the sea level is located the hut of the same name. Along the flanks of the mountain are situated several ski-tracks one big and several smaller very suitable for beginner skiers and children, due to their gentle slopes. The big ski-track is 4700 meters long and the serving ski lift is 3100 meters long....................5 km PLACE of RUPITE An interesting excursion can be made to the Place of Rupite, which is situated about 20 kilometers south from the town of Sandanski near the Struma River. It is located on an extinct volcano crater, and its relief is formed by the volcano hill Kojuh and the hill of Pchelina. Тhe place is famous for its thermal springs, which are curative and are visited by many tourists. There are a wide variety of plants in the region some of them listed in the Red Book of Bulgaria. It is this place where is situated the village of Rupite. Here are located the house and grave of the famous Bulgarian prophet Baba Vanga. She said that Rupite is filled with specific cosmic energy. On her insistence, in 1992 the temple of St. Petka was built in the village, and at once turned into a place for pilgrimage of thousands of people needing healing. The icons on the iconostasis are painted by Professor Svetlin Rusev................................100 km KOVACHEVITZA South-east from Bansko, in the most south-western part of the Rhodopi Mountain is the architectural reserve Kovachevitza village. This is a real piece of heaven, created by the nature and formed by the hard-working hands of Kovachevitza*s craftsmen. In Kovachevitza you can feast your eyes on a variety of nature*s gifts gathered in one place picturesque canyons, a crystal-clear river, cool and fresh forests and towering peaks. There are about 110 revival houses in the village, some of which are turned into small hotels. The church of St. Nikola was built in 1848. Its unique architectural style has been unaltered since the foundation of Kovachevitza in 17 century; the building materials are wood and stone. The narrow streets with their pleasant old houses will carry you into the remote bygone days. Here you will be immersed in another world, different from anything else you may have seen. Kovachevitza will conquer you with its magical charm and you will love it forever...............................59 km LESHTEN Leshten is a picturesque resort village, which has preserved the unique spirit of the gone times. Huddled up in the mountain it attracts many tourists not only from the country but from abroad, too. The preserved atmosphere of the past welcomes you everywhere. You will find it in the pretty white houses with large terraces /chardatsi/, in the spacious yards dotted with flowers and greenery, and in the stone streets which curve round them. The village inn is located in the square. The authentic atmosphere is preserved even in the interior of many houses, which are turned into hotels - wooden floor, a fireplace, and hand-woven rugs. A sight of interest in the village is the old church where you may choose to light a candle and pray. The village offers various opportunities for entertaining - horse back riding, hunting, fishing, a walk in the mountain. You can gather herbs and wild flowers or visit some of the near ethnographic complexes Dolen, Koprivlen, Delchevo, or Rozhen monastery or Bansko...................................61 km DELCHEVO The picturesque village of Delchevo is situated close to the town of Gotse Delchev. The village has preserved its architectural appearance since the 18th 19th century. The hospitable hamlet receives many tourists who come here to feast their eyes on the lovely nature, the magnificent views and the incredible untouched architecture. The village is located amidst an old beech forest. Nature has gifted it with clean and cool waters and crystal clear air which can make you quite dizzy. The architectural ensembles supplement the picture, bringing harmony and perfection. Different cultures, traditions and modern life are mixed in a fascinating way.
