The United Kingdom comprises England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The Isle of Man and the Channel Islands are so-called "Crown Dependencies" and, legally, not part of the United Kingdom.
Its capital, London, has the top global city rating, along with New York, of Alpha++, signifying its top quality infrastructure. London is Europe's most popular tourist destination, attracting close to 15 million visitors annually.
Other than London, there are numerous tourist attractions in the UK. Many are associated with history and heritage, such as Edinburgh, Bath, Chester, Canterbury, Greenwich and Portsmouth. For beautiful landscapes there are the attractive Lakes District and the spectacular Dartmoor and Snowdonia National Parks.
The UK has more than 7,500 miles of coastline and over 1,000 islands, most off the coast of Scotland. Bournemouth and Poole in the South and Blackpool in the North West are popular seaside resorts.
The UK is easily reached by plane to London or rail from Europe through the English Channel. |
