Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany and a most pleasant travel destination.
The city is divided into seven boroughs (Bezirke). The borough of Hamburg-Mitte, the central city district, is spectacular in many ways. St. Pauli has the famous Reeperbahn entertainment area. HafenCity is the site of one of he largest urban development projects in Europe. Altstadt and Neustadt represent historical Hamburg and are, therefore, desirable locations for visitors.
Altona was an independent city for many years, but is now a borough of Hamburg. From the 17th to the 19th century it prospered under Danish rule. Its shipbuilding and fishing industries thrived largely thanks to its Jewish community which had settled there to avoid severe restrictions in neighboring Hamburg. |
